I think many curators in contemporary art are driven by the perception to lead the pack or be on the edge of developments in the contemporary art world. At the same time, programming can be driven by many diverse influences, including museum trustees, collection focus, funding, external political pressures or other issues.

If there is a perception that at some level museums are not competitive - for the leisure dollar, for patrons' funding, for limited free time - then we as professionals are sadly mistaken. Curators are also competitive for limited funding from external sources, for state and federal dollars for exhibition.

Obviously, at some level, a show must be competitive in terms of its timeliness, its scholarliness, and its relevance.
