You mention early on in the post that works of art similar to those on display in The Way of the Elders: The Buddha in Modern Theravada Traditions are “often commissioned and donated to Buddhist temples and monasteries.” Were the specific works of art on display originally intended to fulfill a similar religious function, and if so, how did they end up in LACMA’s collection? In designing an exhibition such as this one how do you take into account that the displayed works, while shown as aesthetic objects in a museum setting, also are simultaneously part of an active faith tradition?
