The lack of period rooms at LACMA has long made its display of decorative arts and, in particular, architectural artistry through the centuries -- which is a category and type of exhibit that has been pretty much non-existent at the museum since 1965 -- seem too much like what shoppers come across in the housewares section of a department store. 

An example of what I&#039;m describing is evident in LACMA&#039;s video of &quot;Conservator John Hirx on the Ischenko Pair of Gates&quot; posted to Youtube. It was filmed in one of the museum&#039;s galleries (not helped by its rather low ceiling height) that is about as inspiring and impressive as a home furnishings store on Melrose, or in the Valley or the OC.]]></description>
